Family Paddlingby Tom Todd The Family Paddling Program has now been launched with George Trudel volunteering for and being elected as our first Family Paddling Chair. With the help of Tim Garrand and others, George has put together a schedule of family paddling events for the New Year. For many years we've been losing great paddlers as they move through life's journey to raise a family. It's been a little sad to see them go, but now I'm excited to see that as the kids are getting a little bit older, they are coming back. It is nice to see old friends coming back as well as new paddlers with families joining us. I'm sure it is the dream of many is to share the love of paddling with one's family. The vision of family paddling is to providing opportunities for families to get out paddling with their kids to enjoy the sport together. This is not a program of dumping off your kid to be coached by someone for the day (Soccer Moms?) . This is a program where parents and child share the experience together. The kids and the parents get to learn together, while the kids get to meet and share the activity with other kids, rather than being the only "kid" on the trip, which is what has happened on some of the touring and low level whitewater trips. As the family groups get more experience as well as becoming friends with others, I'm sure the opportunities for more activities will increase. Current activities planned include flatwater lake and river trips, and some canoe camping. It is so nice to see some of our better paddlers coming back to join the paddling family again. Hopefully we'll get a number more to come back and join us. If you are interested in joining in the fun and supporting the Family Paddling group, please contact George.
