Tips from the River RatsCameras While Paddling By Tom Todd On-the-water pictures are spectacular and great to show and give to friends. Non-waterproof cameras need to be carried in a waterproof container and can't be used in heavy water or in a heavy rain. They are also hard to get to at the instant you want that fleeting action shot. A water resistant camera is a much better and not a problem in wet conditions. A zoom on the camera is also very handy to get those close in shots. I and a good number of others in the group have been very happy with our Pentax WR105 film cameras that are water resistant and have a zoom. People have commented that the pictures I get with it are better than those I get with my Nikon SLR. It has been very reliable. Although not recommended, I've taken a good number of 'swims' with it, including on the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. I would appreciate hearing about recommendations for eletronic water resistant cameras. Camera Strap By Tom Todd
I've never lost it on a swim, but I may have come close. To avoid losing it I am planning on attaching a buckle to the strap and a female buckle to the front of my PFD so that I can clip the strap there while I have it looped around my neck. I can still get off the quick shots and won't lose it. I would suggest getting quick disconnect clips that match the clips on your throw bag, dry bag, or helmet. That way you can attach these items quickly to your boat. It is best if all these clips are the interchangeable. Then if you need to clip the camera to the boat you can do that also.
