By Jim Lewis

On Saturday, July 8, 2000 Jim Lewis led a Sea kayaking trip from Lane’s Cove on the North Side of Cape Ann to Wingaersheek Beach at the mouth of the Annisquam River. The group included Jim Lewis, Laura Morgan, Soojin Stickney and Julia Steed Mawson.

The group met at Lane’s Cove at 10:00 am, Saturday morning in the middle of a clear, windless, warm and sunny day. With ocean rollers of less than three feet it could almost be described as a perfect day on the ocean. Anyone that needed to rent kayaks could do so with Discovery Adventures, which is located at Lane’s Cove.

At Wingaersheek Beach we spent some time wading around and collecting sand dollars.

On the trip back to Lane’s Cove we stopped in several of the rocky inlets and coves in an attempt to fend off the effects of seasickness, but with only limited success. One member could not complete the trip and was let off in the cove by the University of Massachusetts research center, which was approximately halfway back to the starting point,

This trip was a relatively short one to acquaint those who have never sea kayaked before with the art of paddling in the Ocean. This area is characterized by a rocky coastline with many sandy coves and inlets. The group left Lane’s Cove and paddled north along the coast to the mouth of the Annisquam River and Wingaersheek Beach, where we ate lunch. Despite the almost perfect weather and ocean conditions a couple in the group developed queasy stomachs, which in other words was a mild case of seasickness. All power boaters in the area were very courteous and steered clear of our path.

After the trip Julia remarked, “I do remember hermit crabs, and beautiful beaches, sand dollars, great clouds, isopods, starfish, nifty rock formations, lovely warm water, nice kayaking teammates."

Anyone else interested in these types of adventures?
